Spring, Lent, and the Seeds We Sow

As we approach Spring Break, we also step into the season of spring, a time of planting, growth, and renewal. In many ways, this mirrors the season of Lent, when we are invited to prepare our hearts and lives for the work God desires to do within us.

The English word Lent is derived from an Old English word meaning “spring.” For a farmer, spring is the most important season of the year because it determines what crops will be planted. It is a time for preparing the soil and planting seeds in hope of a fruitful harvest. In much the same way, Lent calls us to intentional preparation, opening our hearts and lives to God’s work even before we see the growth. Spring invites us to “spring” into action, to do the tasks of the season, prepare the ground, and look forward to the new life that Easter brings.

We have an apricot tree in our backyard, and it is already full of blossoms. Each delicate bud is a reminder that fruit takes time. It begins small, hidden, and fragile, yet with patience, care, and the right conditions, it grows into something abundant. Watching those buds reminds me of the growth we cannot yet see in ourselves and our students. Just as blossoms hint at the fruit still to come, the small and faithful investments we make today foreshadow the lasting work God will accomplish.

In the springtime, I enjoy opening the windows and doors, letting fresh air and light fill the house. In the same way, Lent invites us to open the Scriptures intentionally, allowing God’s Word to speak fresh life into our hearts. Spring encourages us to refresh and reorganize, making room for the energy and growth of the season. Likewise, Lent calls us to set aside distractions and habits that hinder our walk with Christ, creating space for prayer and reflection.

Spring is also a time for planting. We plant flowers, seeds, and trees, trusting that with time they will grow. We can plant seeds of faith, kindness, and hope in others’ lives. A word of encouragement, an act of service, or sharing the love of Christ can blossom into something beautiful beyond what we can see.

Spring reminds us of the privilege and responsibility we have to plant seeds more broadly, seeds of faith, knowledge, and character in the lives of our students. Yet fruit does not appear the moment a seed touches the soil; it comes after a season of patient and faithful cultivation. As Paul reminds us, “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7). Let us not sow sparingly. Let us sow generously and in abundance, trusting that God will bring the fruit in His time and according to His plan.

As you enter Spring Break, I pray your family enjoys rest, renewal, and the joy of being together. May this season remind us that even the smallest seeds of faith, planted in obedience and love, can grow into fruit that lasts for eternity.
