Rooted in the Lord: Honoring the Journey That Shaped Our Seniors

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
Roots are important. They provide a plant with the vital nourishment needed for health and growth. They transport water and minerals that are essential for life. Roots also act as an anchor, holding a plant firm against wind and rain.
As our seniors begin their final year at CCA, we pay special attention to the metaphorical roots they have established. The adults they have become have been shaped by their family, religious community, and friends. There are a host of gardeners who have planted seeds, worked the soil, pruned the branches, and removed weeds. With every Bible verse memorized, every lesson learned, every challenge overcome, God has used these gardeners to gently reveal himself and his nature to them. Working in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, this group has created an environment where students have grown in God’s truth as they were watered by His teachings.

“Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew; like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.” Deuteronomy 32:2
One way we seek to honor those who have been tending these precious roots is through our Robing Ceremony at Senior Dinner. This is a significant moment as students honor those who have not only been on their journey with them but also helped shape who they have become. Each student chooses someone to place their graduation robe on them. It might be a parent, grandparent, sibling, teacher, coach, or pastor. The student writes a tribute to this special person, which is read while the robe is being placed on them. The robing sponsor is a representative of God’s provision for the student through their school years. The robe reminds us that they have been covered in the wisdom and guidance of their family, mentors, and friends. By placing the robe on the students, we are signaling that they are ready to begin the next stage of their journey in life, firmly rooted in God’s truth and love.

“And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love.” Ephesians 3:17
The Robing Ceremony is an occasion for gratitude and thankfulness. We thank God for producing strength, character, and fortitude in our students. Our hope is that they carry this strength with them as they navigate the challenges of life. What they have learned is not just for themselves. It is for His glory. With a faith that is strong, they are ready to carry God’s light to a darkened world.

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:7
