Tips for Celebrating Christmas in Your Home

christmas advent familyIt’s the most wonderful time of the year, right?

It absolutely is!

And our time and attentions are being pulled in so many different directions. Every group our families associate with will have their own Christmas celebrations or events, and in the end, it amounts to a very full month! So, let’s talk about how to be intentional in carving out space in our homes to anticipate the glorious gift of Christ’s birth and give ourselves room to enjoy the Christmas together as a family.

  • Decorate your home in ways you and your family will enjoy and do it together! Set aside a night early in the season and at least get this started (or finished) as a family. Turn on some wonderful music and enjoy a peaceful evening transforming your space into a place that will set the stage for all your advent gatherings – from daily dinners to celebrations large and small.

  • Choose a family advent devotional or reading plan. This form of anticipating and building to the magnificent event of Christ’s coming is a great way to keep our hearts focused. Keeping this very short will ensure it doesn’t get missed regardless of the day’s schedule. You might choose to study the story of Jesus’ coming over the course of the advent season, or to take an attribute or name of Jesus to focus on for each day. Whatever keeps our hearts fixed on Him is a beautiful offering of praise.

Many of the fun advent ideas you find will be a reading plan and activity combined. For instance, a Jesse tree decorated with ornaments your family can create themselves.  Advent calendars of all types are a great way to create anticipation.  Traditional lighting of advent candles on a wreath create beautiful stillness in our homes. celebrating christmas fun family

  • Relax and have fun.  Remember to keep it simple and laugh.  Things will not be perfect.  It is about making memories.  Be intentional with your plans but have flexibility in how it unfolds. Set the stage with God’s word and leave plenty of time to discuss what is on your family’s heart. Talk about the events of that day’s reading, talk about how you are feeling in anticipation of this blessed event or just share the joy the Lord is placing in your hearts.

Enjoy the chaos and the moments of quiet and calm (or silliness and joy!) with your family and let it take a slightly different shape each day.

Above all things just be together as often as you can and speak God’s word into the season.

May you be blessed with great hope and joy as you make your homes a haven for celebration in this season.
