covenant players participate in all-star classic
Three standout seniors from Colleyville Covenant Christian Academy's state finalist football team were invited to participate in the Tom Hillary All-Star Football Classic. Played Saturday, December 11 at Argyle Liberty Christian, this game featured outstanding football players from North Texas private schools.
Quarterback Chase Stewart, receiver/safety Jordan Cross, and lineman Justin Schappell were selected to play in the tenth annual game named in honor of longtime Irving Cistercian football coach Tom Hillary, who passed away in 2000.
Stewart, Cross, and Schappell were all named First Team All-State in TAPPS Division IV for their contributions to Covenant's team which reached state finals for the third time and the state semi-finals for the seventh time in the school's nine varsity seasons.
The All-Star Football Classic matched players from the Fort Worth area against players from the Dallas area. Irving Cistercian's Steve McCarthy coached the Fort Worth team and Bill Persinger of Bishop Lynch coached the Dallas all-stars.
Covenant Football team tapps division iv state runner-up - From December 7, 2010 Star Telegram
Colleyville Covenant wound up facing the team, St. Paul Catholic School of Shiner, that looked like the favorite for the
Division IV title all seasosn. Until a critical mistake near the end - a fumbled reverse on a kick-off return - Covenant hung in the entire game.
"Like any big game, when two teams are evenly matched, it comes down to turnovers and mistakes," coach Barry Morgan said. "But we're trying not to dwell too much on that. I think about all the positives of the year. We won 10 games. It was a great experience. We had a great time in Killeen. We spent the night, and it was a real good bonding time for us."
In a sense, CCA won no matter what. "For us, the final outcome of the game is not entirely based on the score," Morgan said. "It has a lot more to do with how we conduct ourselves, how we represent outselves as Christians. We want to represent our faith so that the other team realizes that if we win, we win with dignity, and if we lose, we leose with dignity and exhibit good character."
So, call it a good day of TAPPS football.

As a junior, Jake played quarterback, leading his team to an 11-1 record, a district title, and a state runner-up finish. Jake said that going to Covenant really prepared him for college, both academically and athletically. It is still a very special place for him. "When I got to college, I felt very prepared. CCA is a good Christian school, and I know that my parents sacrificed to put me, my brother, and my sisters through, and I feel very blessed because of that.
