SOTA Faculty Biographies

Sarah Alexander (piano) is a nationally certified teacher of music, and holds a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy from Texas Christian University. As an active member of MTNA, TMTA, and MCMTA, her students succeed both in local festivals and theory tests. She has been an invited lecturer both at national music conventions and local music associations. Sarah is also sought after as an accompanist for choirs and soloists around the DFW metroplex. In addition to maintaining a private piano studio, Sarah combines her love for Christ and her love for music by serving as a church pianist.

Amy Atkins (voice) is a former CCA student and a graduate of Dallas Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. Amy has been teaching private voice lessons in Birdville Independent School District for the past six years. Amy has spent time performing and teaching music as a volunteer youth worker in SOTA girl violin closeupEngland. Miss Atkins currently performs in regional theatre in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and is a member of Texas Music Educators Association.

Mary Helen Atkins (piano) is currently serving as the pianist at FBC Hurst. She is also using her gifts to accompanying area choirs and to teach voice. After graduating from Baylor University with a degree in Music Education, Mrs. Atkins spent 25 years as a choral director for the Birdville, ISD and Duncanville ISD. She has served as a church pianist, children’s choir director and music teacher in several area churches and private schools.

Silke Holdys (violin, viola) was born in Bonn, Germany and holds a BA and Master of Music degree from Johannes Gutenberg- University in Mainz, Germany and a Master of Music Education and String Pedagogy from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim, Germany. As a child, she spent 9 years in Washington, D.C.. She began playing the violin at 6 years old studying with Luis Haza who is now the Director of the American Youth Philharmonic. After returning to Germany and completing her education, she began her teaching career. She served as the Director of Strings for 11 years in Leimen, Germany. Mrs. Holdys has performed as a violinist in every capacity- as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestra, and recording artist throughout Europe with world-renowned musicians. At the end of 2010, she and her husband moved to the DFW area. She is now serving as the string teacher for CCA.

Amy Ehrlich (Art) is primarily a water media artist. She is the founder of the Creative Arts Studio School of Art & Gallery, and author of the children’s book, “Yes, You Can Draw!”. Amy holds a BA degree in Textiles and Design from the University of Missouri, with additional studies in art & education from the UTA and UNT. Amy’s professional honors include being selected as the resident Artist for Imagisphere Children’s SOTA cello duetMuseum, and being awarded the Japan Fulbright Memorial Scholarship. Amy’s work has been shown throughout Texas, Missouri, and Connecticut, and she has won many awards for her work. She is a signature member of the Society of Watercolor Artists, the Southwest Watercolor Society, and she is also a member of the Texas Art Educators Association. Amy has served for the last eight years as the Grammar School Art teacher at CCA.

Susie Fergus (piano) is Director of Elementary choirs at Travis Academy of Fine Arts in Fort Worth, serves as the Music Specialist at St. Vincent’s school, and is the Elementary Division chair for TPSMEA. Ms. Fergus is a graduate of Auburn University, she holds certification in the Kodaly Method of music education form the PISD/UNT OAKE-endorsed program in Denton, TX, and is also a master's degree candidate at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.. Ms. Fergus has maintained a private studio of voice and piano students in her home for the past several years.

Sarah Gonzalez (cello) was born in Albany, NY. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Wheaton Conservatory of Music, Wheaton, Illinois. She studied cello with Dr. Tanya Lesinsky-Carey, co-founder of the Suzuki Cello School and past president of the Suzuki Association of the Americas as well as studying with the Spanish cello virtuoso Dr. Luis Garcia-Renart, student of Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich.  Mrs. Gonzalez has also studied voice, violin and piano. Mrs. Gonzalez was a cellist in the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra and Wheaton Symphony Orchestra and has performed in many venues throughout the US with her husband, Humberto. She plays a variety of styles ranging from classical to contemporary. She is currently serving as the Pre-grammar music teacher and worship ensemble leader at CCA.

Humberto Gonzalez (classical guitar, piano) was born in Mexico. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Guadalajara. He also holds a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering and Administration from Pan-American University and is currently completing his Masters of Divinity at Moody Theological Seminary. He studied piano with Dr. Friedemann Kessler and choral conducting with Dr. Marco SOTA boy pianoAntonio Verdin. Mr. Gonzalez has been a Worship Pastor and Youth and Young Adults Pastor of several churches in Mexico, Chicago, and Miami, has opened concerts for several bands in the US, and currently teaches music, specializing in piano and guitar.

Lisa Martin (piano) holds a Bachelor of Education and Music Education with a concentration in piano from Hardin Simmons University. Mrs. Martin currently serves as a Kindergarten teacher at CCA where she shares her love of music in her classroom. Lisa is also a licensed Kindermusik specialist. She has maintained a piano studio from her home for over 12 years.

Allison Peterson (Drama) has been involved professionally with youth ministry and teaching in Christian schools for many years. This is her 11th year of teaching and prior to that, she was a missionary with Young Life. Mrs. Peterson holds a degree in Radio, Television and Film Communications with a Dance Specialization and a Master’s Degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. She studied mime and drama at Mimeistry International, toured with the Continental Singers as a principal dancer, and has directed and choreographed over 26 shows.

Stephen Ryland (brass, piano) enjoys being able to use music to praise God and encourage others. He has taught private piano and trumpet lessons and has served as pianist and accompanist at many of the churches with which he has been involved, as well as playing trumpet in church orchestra. Mr. Ryland graduated from Bob Jones University with a degree in Music Education and an emphasis on band instruction.
